2017 DeLorean DMC are Now Open for Pre-Order

Time to get in line for the revamped retro ride

if you’re still looking to get back to the future, the reborn DeLorean Motor Company may have you covered. The Texas-based company just began taking pre-order applications for an upgraded, low volume 2017 production run of the famous DMC-12.

The standard and optional feature list is still being finalized, but the pre-order list will give applicants first priority over the general public. It’s a non-binding application and no deposit is required at this time. Based on the list of questions on the short application, it appears that current and previous DMC owners will get priority.

The original DMC-12 was the lovechild of former GM engineer John Z. DeLorean. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, engineered by Lotus, and underpowered by V-6 engines built by Peugeot, Renault and Volvo, the sports car was a spectacular flop when it finally made it debut in 1981. About 9,200 DMC-12s were built in Northern Ireland before company filed for bankruptcy the following year due it’s inability to raise funding as a result of DeLorean’s arrest on drug trafficking charges. Despite its commercial failure, the car developed a loyal and dedicated fan base thanks to its starring role in the three “Back to the Future” movies.

Production on the new version, which we featured in our “Classics Rock” replica and continuation car roundup, has fallen slightly behind, but the company expects to complete a new chassis prototype in November. Details on the engine supplier are still being decided, so it may still be a while before the new model sees the light of day. We certainly imagine the new DMC-12 will have more than the 130 horsepower of the original.

When production finally begins, DMC plans to build at least one car a month for the first year. Considering it took DeLorean nearly a decade to build his first car, that doesn’t sound so bad. Pricing is still a few months away from being announced, but we imagine the car to go for about $100,000.

On a bright note, there is a choice of manual and automatic transmissions for potential buyers on the pre-order site. No word on “Flux Capacitor” upgrades yet, though.
