General Motors Company sold 171,486 vehicles in January 2014

General Motors Company, commonly known as GM, is an American multinational corporation headquartered in Detroit, Michigan that designs, manufactures, markets and distributes vehicles and vehicle parts and sells financial services.

11.9 percent decrease over January of last year. All brands were down, with Chevrolet hit hardest at a 13.3 percent decline and Buick faring best with only a 1.4 percent dip in sales. GM blamed extreme winter weather and decreased fleet sales for this decline; among other automakers, Ford was also down this month with a 7 percent decline, and Chrysler posted an 8 percent gain over last year.

Winner: Chevrolet Cruze, 16,828 Units Sold

The Chevrolet Cruze was one of the few bright spots in the GM lineup, with a 15.9 percent increase over January of last year. The only other Chevrolet model to post a sales increase this month was the new Chevrolet Corvette, which sold an impressive 2261 units this month. The Cruze also topped the Equinox and Malibu by significant margins this month, making it the second best-selling GM vehicle this month behind only the Chevrolet Silverado pickup.

Winner: Cadillac SRX

The Cadillac SRX had its best January ever with a total of 4446 units sold. This 1.5 percent increase in sales was the only positive gain in the entire Cadillac lineup, which overall saw its sales fall off 13.2 percent compared to January 2014.

Rivalry: Chevrolet Impala and Malibu, 11,898 and 11,822 Units Sold, Respectively

Even though the Chevrolet Impala declined by 15.9 percent this month, it beat its little brother the Chevrolet Malibu by 76 units this month. This is both a bad sign for slow Malibu sales which were down 25.3 percent this month, and also an impressive total for the Impala which traditionally sells fewer units than the more mainstream Malibu midsize sedan.

Loser: Chevrolet Silverado & GMC Sierra, Down 18.4 and 13.5 Percent, Respectively

January was a weak month for the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks, as the two models sold 28,926 and 11,118 units this month, respectively. GM may be phasing out the previous-generation Silverado and Sierra, which have been selling alongside the redesigned trucks for a few months now. Interestingly, the GM trucks’ total number of 40,044 is much closer to the Ford F Series’ January total of 46,536 than usual.

Wait and See: Cadillac CTS, Now Best-Selling Cadillac Car

The new 2014 Cadillac CTS sold relatively well in January, outselling both the Cadillac ATS and XTS sedans to become the best-selling Cadillac car this month. We’ll see if this trend will continue throughout this year, as the ATS outsold the CTS in 2013 overall and XTS and CTS were neck-and-neck at the end of last year.
