2013 Mercedes-Benz GL450 - Confident Ship in a Winter Storm
30 Jan, 2014 - Automobile Magazine Log-Term Tests (Four Seasons)

We found the GL450 to be the optimum conveyance for the 380-mile trek around the south shore of Lake Michigan.

We rolled into the Bay View neighborhood of Milwaukee at about 8:30 p.m. on December 22 in the 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL450 in plenty of time to find some dinner, especially with twenty-four-hour Ma Fischer's or George Webb's as a backup. But we wanted to eat at our favorite pizza place, which is north of Bay View on the East Side, and it closes at 10:30 p.m. We had to check into our AirB2B rental and drop off the two dogs plus our luggage and a load of Christmas presents. And it was snowing.

Forty-five minutes later, it was up to how the four-wheel-drive Mercedes-Benz GL450 with its Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snows tackled traffic and slick road surfaces as temperatures hovered around zero degrees Fahrenheit. Quickly falling snow was accumulating on the ground. The tires grabbed the slippery pavement assuredly. The SUV turned when I turned the wheel, and the brakes brought it to a quick, reassuring stop. There's enough steering feel to conspire with seat-of-the-pants feedback to give fair warning of how close the Merc might be to losing grip. As deputy editor Joe DeMatio has said of the GL450, it drives smaller than it is.

The only real obstacles were other cars and trucks, although at this hour in this weather on a Monday night, traffic was pretty light. Traveling on a combination of I-94 and surface streets, we made it to Lisa's Pizza on North Oakland Avenue with time to spare. We were the last customers of the night.

And so the holidays came and went. Although we don't have a traditional family -- no kids save for the collies -- and we don't own a traditional family car, we found the Mercedes-Benz GL450 to be the optimum conveyance for the 380-mile trek around the south shore of Lake Michigan. With the second and third rows flipped down, my wife and I were able to bring along the two dogs, presents for each other and my family, and our luggage, using both the interior cargo space and a Yakima bag on the roof.

The Yakima bag was strapped to the longitudinal bars on the roof because, unlike our Four Season BMW X1 and Acura MDX, the chrome bars are not flush to the sheetmetal of the Benz's top. You don't need OEM crossbars to make this kind of bag work. Presumably, the bars on the BMW and Acura don't produce as much wind noise and are perhaps more aerodynamic, but the Yakima bag, strapped down as tightly as possible with bungee cords, didn't noticeably affect fuel efficiency. In fact, indicated average fuel mileage climbed a few tenths on the freeway from the 16.6 mpg displayed on the dash when we started out.

Over our short, four-day holiday/vacation, the Benz-Scorpion combo easily handled both slick and deep snow, including only partially plowed street parking in front of our B2B craftsman bungalow. Tire Rack says the Scorpion compound "is molded into a subtly asymmetric tread design that features a stable shoulder area to enhance dry road handling … while angled independent tread blocks with circumferential and lateral sipes help the tire bite into snow."

Just before we left for Milwaukee, I slowly pulled the GL450 into a grocery store parking space, during which the head-toss that both senior editor Joe Lorio and New York bureau chief Jamie Kitman have complained about was more noticeable. On the freeways between metro Detroit and Milwaukee, however, the GL's comfortable but not sloppy ride made for a pleasant trip, and both my wife and I made good use of the power lumbar support in both front seats. The winter tires add a marginal level of road noise over the stock Continental 4x4 Contacts.

The only regrets about the GL are that it isn't a turbodiesel and that I didn't find the heated steering wheel button earlier. Despite diesel-thickening temperatures, that engine option would have saved a couple of long, cold, $80 premium unleaded fill-ups along the way.

The heated steering wheel control is perhaps too logically placed. Don't look for a button on the dash or on the steering wheel. It's a tiny stalk parallel to the cruise control stalk on the steering column, closer to the dash. I hope Lorio and road test editor Chris Nelson found it in time for the Mercedes-Benz GL's next winter adventure.

2016 Audi TT to Be Revealed Next Month?
30 Jan, 2014 - Automobile Magazine News & Rumors

Audi has released a teaser video in anticipation of a new model that will debut on February 12. The video shows a truck making its way up a hill in South Africa, and we think it's likely that the next-generation 2016 Audi TT is inside.

Audi has previously announced that the 2016 TT would launch this year. We've also already seen the advanced new interior of the 2015 Audi TT at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) a few weeks ago, and Audi said at the 2014 Detroit auto show that the Audi Allroad Shooting Brake Concept is meant to preview the look of the next TT coupe.

We expect the new Audi TT to be built on the Volkswagen Group's new MQB modular platform that underpins the new Volkswagen Golf and Audi A3. Spy photos of Audi TT prototypes show a longer, wider overall shape, with shorter overhangs and a sportier look overall. The front end should look much like the Allroad Shooting Brake concept, with its swept-back headlights and hexagonal grille shape. The rear of the new Audi TT looks to imitate the Audi R8 supercar, with an extended rear glass, low decklid, and wide fenders.

In the U.S., we expect to see the familiar 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine as standard equipment, paired with both manual and automatic transmissions as well as front- or all-wheel drive. Higher-performance TT S and TT RS models may follow down the road, either with high-powered versions of this same engine or an updated 2.5-liter inline-five cylinder from the last TT RS. We know that Audi will continue to sell the current TT this year as a 2015 model, so it's unlikely the car would go on sale in the U.S. before January 2015 as a 2016 model.

It's also possible that the new Audi vehicle inside the truck is the next-generation Audi Q7 SUV. We reported last year that the Q7 was up for an emergency redesign to give it a more toned-down look to fit in with the rest of the Audi lineup. Like before, this seven-seat crossover will share its platform with the Volkswagen Touareg and Porsche Cayenne.

Check back on February 12 to see which new Audi is inside the mysterious truck in South Africa.

Volkswagen Beetle Marks 65th Anniversary of U.S. Debut
30 Jan, 2014 - Automobile Magazine News & Rumors

Now in its third generation, the Volkswagen Beetle is celebrating 65 years since its arrival in the United States. Perhaps one of the most recognizable and iconic car designs of the 20th century, the original "Type 1" Volkswagen Beetle was first imported by a Dutch businessman to New York in 1949, paving the way for Volkswagen's presence in the U.S. automotive market.

The rear-engine, air-cooled Bug was loved for its simplicity and funky looks, which particularly captured the tastes and imaginations of buyers in the 1960s. To get a sense for the immense popularity of the Volkswagen Beetle, consider that VW sold as many as 423,000 Bugs a year in the U.S. by 1968. In 2013, the entire Volkswagen brand of eleven models sold 407,704 units, only the second year since the 1970s that VW topped 400,000 units in consecutive years. The original Beetle, largely unchanged since its U.S. introduction in 1949, ceased production in 1977.

Volkswagen pressed on for two decades until it resurrected the model, named the New Beetle, in 1998. Based on the Volkswagen Golf platform, the bubble-shaped, flower-vase equipped New Beetle got off to a hot start, quickly rising above 80,000 units sold in the U.S. However, the Bug-hysteria would sharply subside. By 2010, less than 20,000 New Beetle models were being sold annually.

Redesigned for 2012, the current Volkswagen Beetle is slightly more athletic and mature looking. The new model is still based on the Volkswagen Golf and GTI underpinnings, and is available with three engine options: a 1.8-liter turbo-four, the 2.0-liter 210-hp turbocharged four-cylinder from the GTI, and a torquey 140-hp 2.0-liter turbodiesel also used in the Golf TDI. Over 43,000 Beetle units were sold in the U.S. in 2013.

Although it lacks the precision and feedback of the well-loved GTI, our Four Seasons 2013 Volkswagen Beetle Turbo Convertible has proved that top-down fun still need not come at an astronomical price point. VW has tried to capture some of that old 60s magic with the third-gen Beetle, and there is no doubt that its funky, outgoing personality remains its biggest strength.

2015 Subaru Legacy Teased Ahead Of 2014 Chicago Auto Show
30 Jan, 2014 - Automobile Magazine News & Rumors

Subaru today released a teaser photo that previews the 2015 Legacy sedan set to debut next week at the 2014 Chicago auto show. The car follows up on the Subaru Legacy concept (pictured below) shown at last fall's 2013 Los Angeles auto show.

The teaser photo reveals that the 2015 Subaru Legacy will follow the concept car's swept-back, coupe-like design cues, albeit with four doors. Subaru describes the new Legacy as, "a sporty and modern sedan," which matches what we gleaned from earlier spy photos. Camouflaged versions of the 2015 Subaru Legacy showed that the C-pillar would be angled to let the roof flow gently down into the car's trunk, while the rounded nose would wear headlights that wrapped onto the front fenders.

Subaru Japan characterizes the new Legacy as, "a mid-size sports sedan" that also achieves, "a design required for a flagship model with a quality feel."

Reports suggest that the 2015 Subaru Legacy could adopt higher-quality interior materials, LED lighting, and possibly even a hybrid powertrain. It will also likely receive the updated version of Subaru's EyeSight safety system, which has color cameras with a greater range and faster reaction times. A new version of the car's wagon sibling, the 2015 Subaru Outback, is also expected to debut sometime this year. The 2014 Subaru Legacy currently starts at $21,090, including destination, and is offered with both a 173-hp, 2.5-liter flat-four engine and a 256-hp, 3.6-liter flat-six engine.

The 2015 Subaru Legacy will make its official debut on February 6 at the 2014 Chicago auto show.

2014 Mini Cooper Hardtop Priced at $20,745, Cooper S at $24,395
30 Jan, 2014 - Automobile Magazine News & Rumors

The new Mini Cooper may be less "mini" than before, but it doesn't cost all that much more for 2014. The 2014 Mini Cooper Hardtop starts at $20,745 with destination, and the turbocharged 2014 Mini Cooper S starts at $24,395. These prices represent an increase of just $250 and $300 over the 2013 models, respectively, despite a complete redesign for this retro compact hatchback.

The base 2014 Mini Cooper Hardtop, which rides on a new front-wheel-drive modular platform from BMW, comes standard with a new three-cylinder, 1.5-liter turbocharged engine that makes 134 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, with a six-speed automatic costing $1250 extra. The typical Mini assortment of bright exterior colors and flashy trim is available, as are a few option packages that can drive the price up quickly.

A $1750 Premium Package bundles together a panoramic sunroof, automatic climate control, a premium sound system, and rain-sensing windshield wipers; a $1750 Wired Package adds navigation with traffic information and the Mini Connected infotainment system that includes an 8-inch center display screen; and the $4750 Fully Loaded Package bundles most of this equipment together along with new wheels and sport seats. There is also a $600 Cold Weather Package with heated seats and mirrors, along with a $1500 Sport Package that adds flashier wheels, sport seats, and LED headlights.

The same set of options are available on the 2014 Mini Cooper S, which comes standard with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine making 189 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque. Like the base model, transmissions comprise a standard six-speed manual and an optional six-speed automatic.

The configurator tool for both the Cooper Hardtop and Cooper S is available now on Mini's U.S. website. With the wide array of customization possibilities, it's an entertaining time-waster.

The 2014 Mini Cooper Hardtop and Cooper S go on sale in March, and we are expecting four-door, convertible, and Clubman variants to follow throughout this year.

Ford Invites Customers To "Tough Test" 2015 F-150
30 Jan, 2014 - Automobile Magazine News & Rumors

To prove the 2015 Ford F-150 is tough, the Blue Oval wants everyday customers to test the new pickup truck before it goes on sale. Ford launched today a campaign it calls "You Test," in which customers can apply to put the F-150's strength to the test before the truck hits showrooms.

"We're looking for people who know how to punish a truck," Ford F-150 marketing manager Eric Peterson said in a statement. "Built Ford Tough isn't just a tagline; it's the philosophy that drives us every day to make the best trucks out there."

Interested customers must visit BuiltToughTest.com and describe how they would put the 2015 Ford F-150 to the test. The winning entrants, which must be received by May 31, will be given a Ford F-150 for a week, during which time a film crew will document the real-world testing.

The 2015 Ford F-150 debuted earlier this month at the 2014 Detroit auto show with a new all-aluminum body. Engine choices for the 2015 Ford F-150 comprise a new 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6, a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6, a 3.5-liter V-6, and a 5.0-liter V-8. Ford is eager to note that even though the truck lost about 700 pounds and now uses aluminum, the F-150's frame is still made from steel and it is just as tough as before. The automaker has warned, however, that idling factories to switch to production of the new truck, as well as the added expense of launching the 2015 Ford F-150, could hurt Ford's full-year profits.

Report: BMW To Hold Off on Expanding i-Car Lineup
30 Jan, 2014 - Automobile Magazine News & Rumors

BMW has already invested an astonishing $2.7 billion in its new line of electric BMW i3 and i8 vehicles, and according to Reuters, it will reportedly gauge the market for demand before any further expansion moves forward.

Trademarks are already registered for i1 through i9 names, but BMW will play it safe for now until more information is available about demand. This strategy is consistent with what our European bureau chief Georg Kacher discovered at the 2013 Frankfurt auto show, when Chairman Norbert Reithofer told him that "If demand for i3 is stronger than expected, we can easily expand the capacity and the I line-up, having trademarked all options from i1 to i9." If demand for the i-lineup is insufficient to justify adding another model, the plug-in hybrid technology could still be applied to other crossovers and cars in BMW's existing lineup.

"We need to see how demand for the cars develops," BMW board member Harald Krüger told Reuters.

Already BMW has elicited over 11,000 orders for the i3 city car since it hit showrooms last November, and 1,000 prospective buyers have already stepped up here in the U.S. The 2014 BMW i3 is powered by a 170-hp electric motor directed through the rear-wheels, and has a range of 80 to 100 miles before needing a charge. Base price is set at $42,275. The sporty BMW i8 coupe uses a 131-hp electric motor paired with a turbocharged 1.5-liter inline-three making 170 hp, which together power all four wheels. Combined fuel economy for the BMW i8 is estimated at 94 mpg, and pricing will start at $136,625 including destination.

The BMW i3 is set to go on sale in the second quarter of this year, with the BMW i8 soon to follow.

Toyota Halts Sale of Numerous Models Due to Faulty Fire-Retardant Seats
30 Jan, 2014 - Automobile Magazine News & Rumors

The value of heated seats is difficult to underestimate, especially for those of us in northern states. However, warm-bottomed drivers of certain Toyota models built since August 2012 may have gotten slightly more than they bargained for when they opted for heated seats in their Avalon, Avalon Hybrid, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Corolla, Sienna, Tacoma, and Tundra models.

Due to a cloth pad on the seat-heater assembly that was not up to snuff, according to federal regulations, Toyota has stopped sales of certain vehicles equipped with heated seats. Toyota spokesman John Hanson told us today that the issue came to Toyota's attention when a South Korean safety review found that the seat-heating material in question did not meet the minimum rate at which it is supposed to retard flames. Toyota changed suppliers in 2012, so the issue only affects models built since August of that year.

No reports of fires or accidents have surfaced in relation to the issue, which could result in a recall depending on how the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) rules in the case. Hanson says that Toyota has submitted a petition to NHTSA in hopes of determining that the non-compliant material is inconsequential, which if granted, would mean existing vehicles would not need to be retrofitted with any new parts.

The number of affected vehicles currently out on the road is as yet undetermined, but for affected vehicles currently in dealer inventory, Toyota is in the process of preparing a modification which should bring the seats in line with federal regulations. If necessary, owners will be able to have the modified seat heater assembly replaced at a Toyota dealership at no cost.

Porsche Boxster GTS and Cayman GTS (2014) hotter Porsche twins scooped

It’s not quite a Cayman GT3, but it’s the next-best thing: the Porsche Cayman GTS. Yes, the entry-level coupe and its soft-top stablemate, the Boxster, will spawn uprated GTS models later this year. Expect to see a Porsche Boxster GTS and Cayman GTS at the Beijing motor show in April 2014.
Like the now-defunct 997 GTS and current Panamera GTS, the new mid-engined twins will receive subtle drivetrain and chassis upgrades, and a Porsche ‘SportDesign’ bodykit to mark them out from lesser Porkers.
Thanks to a reported leak during a Porsche USA new model briefing, we can bring you the details on just how Porsche plans to make two of the world’s best sports cars even more fun.

What powers the Porsche Boxster GTS and Cayman GTS?

A tuned version of the 3.4-litre flat-six that rests amidships in the current Boxster S and Cayman S. A token 15bhp power bump boosts the Boxster GTS to 330bhp; the Cayman GTS further still to 340bhp.
It’s no headline boost, but it’s still enough to shave 0.1sec off each car’s 0-62mph time versus its regular ‘S’ version. So, the Boxster GTS will do the sprint in 5.0sec as a manual (4.9sec with PDK on board), and the Cayman GTS manages 4.9sec, or a 911 Carrera-baiting 4.8sec with PDK.

So there’ll be two transmission options?

Yes! Unlike the hard-core 991 GT3, you can still have a stick-shift – in fact, it comes as standard on both cars. Though the paddleshift PDK ’box is an option, Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) will be standard-fit on Boxster GTS and Cayman GTS models.
PASM is essentially adaptive damping, allowing the driver to switch between ‘Normal’ and stiffer ‘Sport’ modes by prodding a damper icon button on the centre console. The ride height of Porsches equipped with PASM is 10mm lower than those on regular passive dampers to further improve agility.

What else do I get on my Boxster or Cayman GTS?

20in ‘Carrera S’ alloy wheels are standard. Don’t be fooled by the 19s on the test mules in CAR’s spy gallery – that’s just a winter tyre-shod red herring. Eagle-eyed readers will spot the Cayman GTS pictured here wears the yellow calliper giveaways of PCCB (Porsche Carbon Ceramic Brakes). The track-spec stoppers are thought to remain a pricey option, commanding circa-£5000 premium over the smaller steel discs.
Boxster GTS and Cayman GTS models will also feature a subtle 918 Spyder-inspired bodykit. As seen in our spy shots, the cars get a reprofiled front bumper with more angular air intakes, plus slim LED running lights. Twin exhaust pipes are housed in a more aggressive rear diffuser. Unlike the old Cayman R, there’s no fixed rear spoiler – both cars retain their pop-up wings.

How much will I pay for a GTS?

A several thousand-pound premium for either, versus their Boxster S and Cayman S counterparts. The Boxster GTS is likely to tip over the £50,000 mark, with the Cayman GTS slightly more again at £52,000-£53,000. The cheapest 911, remember, is £73,413.
The GTS twins will go on sale in May 2014, after their April 2014 debut in Beijing. Looks like life just got a little tougher for the Jaguar F-type and Lotus Evora.

2014 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk: Around the Block

Our first opportunity to drive the 2014 Jeep Cherokee was in Moab, Utah, where the Trailhawk version showed off-road chops that earned it the brand's revered "Trail-Rated" badge. This capability helps quell the doubters who say that this unibody crossover based on the same Fiat-sourced platform as the Dodge Dart can never live up to the Cherokee name. However important this kind of rock-crawling, sand-kicking ability may be for Jeep's reputation, it doesn't matter much to most shoppers in the compact crossover segment. Just look at the best-selling Honda CR-V and Ford Escape: neither crossover even offers a full-time four-wheel-drive system, let alone an available locking rear differential and hill descent control like the Jeep's. We spent a few weeks in a 2014 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk to see if even the most off-road-oriented Cherokee can live up to the on-road-biased demands of today's typical crossover buyer.
This particular Cherokee test car was nearly loaded, with the optional 271-hp, 3.2-liter V-6 engine, the Trailhawk-exclusive Active Drive Lock four-wheel-drive system, and various luxury options like navigation, leather, automatic climate control, and a heated steering wheel—our personal favorite for the way it helps us get through Michigan winters. All of this makes for an as-tested price of $36,120. That's a lofty sum for sure, but as associate editor Greg Migliore says, "the price is reasonable considering the equipment level, and it does make a style statement." We've yet to come to a consensus on whether or not we like the Cherokee's controversial, wedge-like front end, but self-proclaimed "Jeep guy" Migliore is in favor of it. It's a design that looks less extreme in the flesh than in photos.
We weren't at all torn about our Cherokee's impressively trimmed interior. The stitched leather and subtle wood and aluminum accents in our upper trim model gave off a high-class, baby-Grand Cherokee vibe. That's a welcome change from the cheap, plasticky interiors of other compact Jeeps like the Compass, Patriot, and the now-defunct Liberty, which the Cherokee replaces. We found rear-seat room to be competitive with other small crossovers too, although copy editor Rusty Blackwell notes that the Cherokee's high cargo floor compromises space behind the seats. Lesser Cherokees than the Trailhawk have a compact spare tire in place of our tester's full-size spare, which opens up more storage space below the cargo floor.
Once underway, the 2014 Jeep Cherokee's upscale demeanor continues to impress. Despite the aggressive all-terrain tires that come standard on the Trailhawk, the Cherokee is quiet on the highway, composed over potholes and frost heaves, and surprisingly agile through the turns as well. The steering is heavy but accurate, and the Cherokee's chassis is tuned for a sportier feel than softly sprung competitors like the Honda CR-V and Nissan Rogue. Power from the V-6 is "more than adequate," executive editor Todd Lassa says. He praises the nine-speed automatic for shifting "smoothly and seamlessly." It appears that the Cherokee's production delays for last-minute transmission calibration paid off in the end.
"The Cherokee feels bigger and more substantial than the intended competition," Lassa continues. "Because I drove it 50 miles home in a snowstorm, this CUV's substance felt reassuring." This sense of solidity is backed up by the Jeep Cherokee's hefty 300-600 lbs of extra weight compared to other compact crossovers. This hurts fuel economy, despite the nine-speed transmission's mpg-friendly gearing. We only got an indicated 17 mpg in 200 miles of driving with more time spent on the highway than around town. Non-Trailhawk Cherokee models with lighter-duty four-wheel-drive systems and/or the four-cylinder engine achieve considerably higher EPA mileage ratings, but if Jeep really wants to challenge the class leaders in this area, then the Cherokee needs to lose some weight.
Migliore calls the 2014 Cherokee "a modern SUV that's right for the times." The Cherokee has sold extremely well in its first two months, rivaling the popular Wrangler, which was the best-selling Jeep in 2013. After years of getting by with subpar compact Jeeps like the Compass and Patriot, this new Jeep Cherokee finally gives Jeep a crossover that can compete on its own merits.

2014 Acura MDX SH-AWD - Four Seasons Introduction

2014 Acura MDX SH-AWD - Four Seasons Introduction
29 Jan, 2014 - Automobile Magazine Log-Term Tests (Four Seasons)

The three-row luxury crossover is the great automotive confluence of a cosseting cabin and people-carrying practicality, and the last-generation Acura MDX was one of our favorites. A 2012 model easily bested contenders from BMW, Infiniti, and Lincoln in an April 2012 comparison test, and as if to confirm our decision, the MDX has been Acura's best-selling model since 2011. No wonder we were so eager to get behind the wheel when a brand new 2014 Acura MDX arrived at last year's New York auto show.
New from the chassis up, the 2014 Acura MDX has smarter styling, a more modern interior, a few hundred fewer pounds of mass, and better fuel economy. For the first time ever, Acura launched a front-wheel-drive version alongside the AWD model. The MDX’s wheelbase is longer, its cabin better insulated, its equipment list more comprehensive, and its chassis designed for improved handling. Acura even claims the new MDX is eight seconds faster around the Nurburgring than its predecessor, a metric almost comically irrelevant to crossover buyers.
When ordering our ideal 2014 Acura MDX, we knew we'd rather have the Super Handling all-wheel drive (SH-AWD) than front-wheel drive, and then we sprung for the Advance and Entertainment packages. That pushed the price tag to $57,400, or $14,215 more than an entry-level MDX. That's certainly a hefty sum, but as a result our 2014 Acura MDX is overflowing with high-end gadgets.
For starters, we wanted SH-AWD because the system automatically shuffles torque between the left- and right-hand wheels to improve grip and handling, a blessing when the car arrived just before the Polar Vortex smothered Michigan with snow. On top of that, our 2014 Acura MDX boasts touchscreen navigation, heated and cooled front seats, push-button starting, a 16.2-inch rear screen with DVD player, a 12-speaker sound system, and adaptive cruise control with automatic emergency braking.
Immediately upon taking delivery, we dropped more money on the 2014 Acura MDX to prepare it for winter. First up was a set of durable rubber floor mats from our Acura dealership, which set us back $199.28 but should keep slush from ruining the crossover's carpets. There's no doubt that a well-appointed, spacious crossover will be in high demand for staffers taking road trips, so we expect our 2014 Acura MDX to quickly rack up tens of thousands of miles in dozens of states over the next twelve months. We recently named the Tesla Model S P85 on a list of our favorite sleeper cars, but this latest clip might really let the secret loose. The all-electric Tesla Model S P85 lined up for two runs against a heady competitor at Palm Beach International Raceway—a 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray equipped with the Z51 performance package and a six-speed automatic—and the results are delightfully eyebrow-raising.
The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette, our 2014 Automobile of the Year, is a well-known powerhouse thanks to its blaring 6.2-liter V-8 engine that commands 455 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. With the Z51 performance package, the iconic sports car gets performance gear ratios, an electric limited-slip differential, upgraded chassis components, a unique aerodynamics kit, bigger 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels — and a power boost to 460 hp. All that raw American Corvette muscle sets the bar high for the underdog Tesla Model S, our 2013 Automobile of the Year. The Tesla’s P85 performance package gives the Model S a surging 416 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque, which is immediately available at 0 rpm thanks to the all-electric drivetrain. There's also no delay when the Tesla changes gear, as it has a single-speed transmission.
Contributor Ezra Dyer has shown that the Tesla Model S is capable of out-dragging a 560-hp BMW M5, much to the chagrin of many an M fanboy. Can the wily Tesla Model S dethrone another mainstay performance nameplate? Will the Tesla’s all-electric power have enough juice to hang with the Corvette’s hellish gasoline V-8? To see whether the 2013 Automobile of the Year can take down the 2014 Automobile of the Year, you’ll have to watch the video below.

Subaru first arrived on the scene in Japan in 1958, with the Subaru 360 that it whimsically advertised as, “cheap and ugly.” Since then, Subaru has produced 20 million vehicles in Japan, marking a major milestone for the brand.
“This remarkable achievement of 20 million-unit domestic production would not have been possible without our esteemed customers and the years of diligent work by our employees, past and present,” Fuji Heavy Industries president Yasuyuki Yoshinaga said at the company’s ceremony.
Production in Japan has moved along at a steady rate since 1992, when cumulative total production stood at 10 million units. Only 11 years later, in 2003, Subaru reached the 15 million vehicle mark, leading up to this most recent 20 million vehicle milestone after another 11 years.
Exports to the U.S. began in 1968, and Subaru offered the small economy-focused 360 for a very affordable $1,297. Between then and now, Subaru has built a strong reputation in the U.S. founded on build quality, longevity, and all-wheel-drive capabilities of its vehicles. Subaru reached six million vehicles sold in the U.S. in November 2012, and following its strongest U.S. sales year of all time in 2013, that total has increased to almost seven million vehicles sold to date. According to Subaru, American sales now constitute about 55 percent of total Subaru sales worldwide.
U.S. manufacturing will play an even greater role in Subaru’s growing future, as plans are in motion to expand production at its Lafayette, Indiana plant. The decision will add capacity for Subaru Impreza production set to begin at the plant in 2016, amidst news that Subaru will no longer build the Toyota Camry at the Lafayette factory when its agreement with Toyota expires. As Subaru Outback and Forester sales continue to lead the charge in U.S. sales, redesigned 2015 Subaru WRX and 2015 WRX STI models will arrive early this year to appeal to the more enthusiast-oriented market.

Nissan thought inside the box for its latest promotional video that was made in partnership with Amazon.com. After showing the 2014 Nissan Versa Note for sale on the popular retail website, Nissan actually delivered on its promise by sending a giant cardboard box with a Versa Note inside to a customer in Madison, Wisconsin.
The 2014 Nissan Versa Note was first offered on Amazon.com as part of a special promotional deal from Nissan. Customers who opted to buy their Versa Note hatchback online were matched up with a local Nissan dealer to complete the transaction, and the first batch of buyers won a $1000 Amazon gift card as well. Nissan then agreed to deliver the new Versa Note in person to three of these buyers, along with a film crew to document the car’s arrival in the giant box.
The 2014 Nissan Versa Note is a subcompact hatchback that starts at $14,800 with destination for the base S model with a five-speed manual transmission. All 2014 Versa Note hatchbacks are powered by the same 1.6-liter, four-cylinder engine that achieves EPA fuel economy ratings of up to 31/40 mpg city/highway when equipped with the optional CVT.
Check out the video below to see the new 2014 Nissan Versa Note delivered in a gigantic cardboard box.

Buried in a document meant for investors and analysts, Ford revealed yesterday that launching the all-new 2015 F-150 pickup truck may hurt the automaker's profits. The company plans to idle factories for longer to accommodate the switch from the current truck to the 2015 Ford F-150, which could hurt overall sales for the year.
In its statement, Ford warned that the automaker's North American full-year 2014 profit would likely be lower than the impressive $8.6 billion it reported for 2013. Ford expects to report an operating margin of 8 or 9 percent this year. In 2013 Ford's North American operations posted a 9.9-percent margin, down from a 10.4-percent margin in 2012.
According to Automotive News, Ford CFO Bob Shanks told reporters yesterday that the projected profit dip is, "largely attributable to F series." Ford says that it will be forced to idle its Dearborn Truck Plant in Michigan for 11 weeks on top of the usual summer shutdown, and to idle the Kansas City, Missouri, plant that builds the F-150 for two weeks beyond the summer shutdown, to switch to 2015 Ford F-150 production. As a result, Ford will have fewer trucks to sell and expects, "lower wholesale [sales] volume than in 2013."
On top of that, Ford warns that, "higher manufacturing, engineering and spending-related costs," for new product launches will cut into its profitability. The switch to using aluminum for the bodywork of the 2015 Ford F-150 will account for a large portion of that additional cost.
Ford, meanwhile, has publicly downplayed any concerns over the new truck's launch. "Our team is very confident in this launch," executive chairman Bill Ford Jr. told us at the introduction of the 2015 Ford F-150. "We know aluminum well."

Hyundai has been gradually improving the Genesis Coupe since its inception in 2009, and for 2014 this rear-wheel-drive sports coupe is upgraded once again. A few powertrain enhancements along with the addition of Hyundai’s Blue Link telematics system means a price bump of $2120 up to $27,245 with destination.
Matching up the 2014 and 2013 models is not an apples-to-apples comparison, though, as the base 2014 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T powered by a 274-hp, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder now comes standard with an eight-speed automatic, whereas previously the base trim had a manual. This automatic transmission receives a new rev-matching feature, and the six-speed manual transmission—which, in 2.0T models is now restricted to the $28,095 2.0T R-Spec trim level—has a hill-start assist feature as standard for 2014.The R-Spec trim level is the most performance-oriented Hyundai Genesis Coupe, with Brembo brakes, a special suspension, 19-inch wheels and summer tires, and sport seats. The top $30,195 2.0T Premium trim level, which adds a power driver’s seat, Hyundai Blue Link Telematics, a sunroof, and navigation, continues to be automatic-only.
Moving up to the larger, 3.8-liter V-6 engine that produces 348 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, the $30,245 Genesis Coupe 3.8 R-Spec is the starting trim level and comes standard with the six-speed manual transmission. The $33,045 Genesis Coupe 3.8 Grand Touring—which adds heated seats, navigation, Blue Link, pushbutton start, and automatic climate control—is automatic only, and the top genesis Coupe 3.8 Ultimate costs $34,295 with the manual and $35,495 with the eight-speed automatic. The Genesis Coupe 3.8 Ultimate comes standard with leather, Brembo brakes, 19-inch alloy wheels, Xenon headlights, and a rear spoiler.
The 2014 Hyundai Genesis Coupe also adds five new colors and a new interior cloth option. For a sportier engine note, Hyundai has also added an intake sound induction pipe to 2.0T models, and a high-performance synchronizer ring is added to the manual transmission as well.
The 2014 Hyundai Genesis Coupe is on sale now.

The sale of Chrysler Group to Fiat has been completed, just as the American company reported today its net income of $1.8 billion after taxes in 2013, representing a 9-percent increase compared to 2012. Chrysler also sold 9 percent more vehicles in 2013 than in the previous year, totaling 2,401,000 units.
Chrysler closed out 2013 with a solid fourth quarter profit, earning $659 million after taxes, up 74 percent from 2012. It is Chrysler’s tenth consecutive quarter of positive net income. The impressive final quarter of 2013 is, according to Chrysler, due to strong sales gains from the Jeep Cherokee, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Ram 1500 pickup series. This growth resulted in a slight gain in U.S. market share, reaching 11.4 percent for the year compared to 11.2 percent in 2012.
With the books closed on 2013, Chrysler moves forward into 2014 with a completed sale to Fiat. The Italian automaker marked the finalization of the purchase with a corporate reorganization reflecting the union of the two brands, establishing Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V., which will serve as the Netherlands-based parent company. The organization also revealed its new logo today, pictured below,
“Today is one of the most important days in my career at Fiat and Chrysler,” CEO Sergio Marchionne said in a statement. “Today we can say that we have succeeded in creating solid foundations for a global automaker with a mix of experience and know-how on a level with the best of our competitors.” The completed sale brings the long saga between Fiat and Chrysler to a close, following months of negotiations and disagreements over the value of Chrysler’s shares owned by the United Auto Workers Voluntary Employee Beneficiary Association (VEBA) trust. Fiat first took a partial stake in Chrysler in 2009, when the American automaker was at the brink of bankruptcy.
Chrysler’s first big step forward in 2014 will be the introduction of the redesigned 2015 Chrysler 200, set to go on sale in the second quarter of this year.
